Water & Well-Being
Adult Swim Program
Adult swim lessons in Glen Allen, VA
For beginners who want to feel safe, calm, and confident in the water
Learning to swim as an adult can feel intimidating — especially if you have tried before and still do not feel at ease in the water. Frustration, fear, and self-consciousness are more common than you may think.
You deserve an approach that is patient, supportive, and grounded in care.
I specialize in helping adult beginners and hesitant swimmers in Glen Allen, Short Pump, Richmond, and the surrounding Central Virginia area build comfort, safety, and confidence in the water through gentle, holistic instruction that supports both your physical learning and your mindset. Whether you are starting for the first time or beginning again after past frustration, this is a place where you can learn differently — and begin to experience the water with more peace, freedom, and trust.
Swimming is more than a life skill. It can become a source of joy, calm, and well-being.
If the water makes you nervous,
this space was created for you.
Many adults come to swim lessons carrying more than a desire to learn.
Some never had the chance to learn as children.
Some feel embarrassed that they do not yet know how to swim.
Some have had frightening or uncomfortable experiences in the water.
Some want to feel safer with their kids, on vacations, near pools, or at the beach.
Some are simply longing to feel more free.
Whatever brings you here, you are welcome.
You do not need to push through fear.
You do not need to “already be comfortable.”
You do not need to keep up with anyone else.
You can learn gently.
You can learn gradually.
You can learn as an adult.
A more peaceful relationship with water is possible.
Imagine if it were possible to:
Increase your comfort level in the water
Learn foundational swimming and safety skills
Feel more calm and supported in your body
Release stress through being in and near water
Develop a freeing, more peaceful relationship with water
That is the heart of Water & Well-Being.
This work supports both your physical skillset and your mindset as you begin or continue learning to swim.
Meet Sarah
Hi, I’m Sarah King.
I’ve been teaching swimming for over two decades, and my favorite clients to work with are adult beginners. I specialize in gently guiding adults with no or limited swimming experience through the fundamentals of learning to swim.
As a former collegiate swimmer and 25-year swim instructor with a background in Social Work and Learning and Development, I bring together professional swim instruction and whole-person support. I care deeply about helping clients not only learn skills, but also experience the emotional shift that can happen when the water begins to feel less like a threat and more like a place of freedom, peace, and possibility.
It is a joy to watch adults discover that learning to swim can be realistic, empowering, and even fun.
What makes Water & Well-Being different?
A gentle, holistic approach to adult swim instruction
My teaching style is especially supportive for adults who are:
Nervous in the water
Working through fear or anxiety
Learning later in life
Starting with very little experience
Looking for a patient, non-judgmental instructor
When we work together, you can expect:
Patient guidance at your pace
Frequent check-ins for comfort and understanding
Small steps that build confidence over time
Clear instruction in swim fundamentals and water safety
Encouragement that honors your whole experience, not just your technique
This is not about forcing progress.
It is about building trust, confidence, and skill in a way that feels supportive and sustainable.
Why learn to swim as an adult?
Because swimming can change your life in practical and meaningful ways.
Swimming can help you:
Feel safer around pools, beaches, boats, and family activities
Build physical confidence and body awareness
Access movement that supports your health and well-being
Experience calm, clarity, and stress relief in the water
Enjoy more freedom, play, and connection in your life
For many adults, learning to swim becomes about much more than swimming.
It becomes about courage, trust, possibility, and joy.
What if I have fear of water or anxiety?
That is exactly why this work exists.

Testimonials from previous adult swimming clients:
“You have made a tremendous difference to my life. Really can’t thank you enough for your patience, encouragement, and support to help me get over to the deep end literally and in my mind. So a heartfelt thank you!”
Gugush, Adult Beginner Swim Client
“Everything was perfect. Enough structure and very comfortable. I never felt rushed or uneasy. I had enough time to reflect and be by myself. But never felt like I was waiting around wondering what to do.
Also, I can swim. With my face in the water. I learned that after being afraid of any water deeper than a bathtub since I was 6 years old, if I can let myself be still, feel the water, then I can float and I can breath and I can move through it. Literally and metaphorically.”
“I had fun and you are a great teacher!”
- Surphia, Adult Beginner Swim Client
“The experience is amazing! Sarah was very clear in her instructions and gave very helpful advices to individuals. The only surprise I have is that her teaching is so effective that my swimming gets improved in no time!”
